The Graystone Society was created in 1984 to assist the City of Coatesville with municipal improvement and economic development through historic preservation. With its acquisition of two major landmark properties, the Society has firmly established its mission of recognizing, conserving, and promoting Coatesville's considerable architectural and cultural heritage. The city remains a vital center of America's historic iron and steel industry.

We would like to invite you to join or renew your membership in The Graystone Society, and to be a part of the rich past and exciting future that this prestigious organization represents.

Theseare exciting times in the Lukens National Historic District. We are pleased to announce:

  • We have taken full possession of Brandywine Mansion, home of Rebecca Lukens, and the keystone of the National Iron and Steel Heritage Museum.
  • Interior restoration of the Tenant House has been completed and houses our administrative offices.
  • A sonarsphere, built by Lukens for the US Navy has been returned to the Lukens National Historic District and is on display.
  • We are searching for other products of the Lukens Mills to bring back home to Coatesville.
  • We are in the process of acquiring the mill buildings from Arcelor Mittal steel for the Heritage Museum.

During the upcoming year we will continue with our existing programs and expand to embrace new ones. The research center in Terracina serves to stabilize and catalog our collections, and also makes those collections accessible to interested Members. We will be acquiring additional historic properties, and carrying on with the restoration projects of our existing buildings.

Membership in the Graystone Society is used to help cover general administration costs. Your support allows for the opening our properties to the general public and coordination of our education programs.

Being a member of The Graystone Society affords you numerous benefits, which are listed on the enclosed application form. Membership also means you are eligible for discounts at the many events sponsored throughout the year, including our Concert Series and Lecture Series, the Victorian Ice Cream Festival, and other new events planned for this year.

There is one benefit of membership that is not as tangible, but is easily the most important. At The Graystone Society, we feel that we are about more than just the physical restoration of historic buildings and the acquisition of artifacts. We are most of all about restoration of the pride felt in hard work well done, and the reacquisition of our shared heritage and history.
We hope you will join us.
