The Penrose family of Philadelphia were socially prominent and were High Church protestant Episcopalian. Rebecca's brother, Isaac Pennock, Jr., married Harriet Penrose. Further, Harriet Penrose's brother, James Penrose, married Marian Pennock, youngest daughter of Isaac and Martha Pennock and therefore Rebecca's youngest sister. James and Harriet's son, Charles Penrose, thus entered the family circle as cousin to Dr. Charles and Isabella Lukens. In 1859 he entered into the firm as head clerk. |

The trend of accepting family members into the senior level management continued when he became junior partner. However, Penrose was not a Quaker and, during the Civil War, this may have contributed to the decision to produce iron for military purposes.
The firm was then called Huston and Penrose from about 1859 to about 1870. |
